ARTH 332 History of Photography

This course studies the history of photography from a chronological and theoretical perspective specifically in relation to its position within modern art. Students will read canonical texts in conjunction with an exploration of the medium from its 19th century origins to its present use in contemporary art. The course will evaluate the medium of photography as a utilitarian commercial activity and as a culture-producing medium within the field of visual art and aesthetics. We will focus on photography's evolution against biographical, historical, economic and social contexts. Seminars will consist of slide lecture, field trips to exhibitions, group discussion and student research presentations. Lecture.
