POHI 335 Migration and Colonization

This seminar introduces students to the history of colonization, focusing particularly on the period of European colonial expansion from the Spanish conquest of the Americas in the fifteenth century to the 'Scramble for Africa' in the nineteenth century. Topics include the causes and consequences of colonial expansion, the rule of colonial elites and their sources of power, the Atlantic slave trade and the abuses of indigenous and immigrant peoples.
