POHI 336 Liberation and Decolonization
This seminar explores the collapse of Europe's empires and the anti-colonial struggles that emerged in Africa, Asia and the Americas between the eighteenth and the twentieth centuries. Topics include the complex problems of national identity in an era of wars of liberation, the intellectual systems that anti-colonial movements developed (republicanism, nationalism, socialism, Islamism) and the internal class and ethnic divisions within post-colonial states.
